Economic Analysis and Policy

AIMS OF THE MODULE

The module Economic Analysis and Policy aims to:

  • develop competencies of graduate students in the area of economic analysis (macroeconomic and microeconomic) and policy (implementation and policymaking)
  • involve graduate students into professions of economic analysts, researchers and policymakers on national and international level, having in mind international compatibility of the programme and national accreditation
  • make the graduates able to give contribution to further development of economic theory and analysis, as well as economic policymaking in accordance with the goals of economic and social improvement and development
  • create experts who will professionally and ethically perform tasks of undergraduate degree economist.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

After completing this module, students will be able to:

Submodule Macroeconomic analysis and policy

  • analyse the effects of measures of economic policy in government and non-government sector, research organizations (fiscal and monetary policy, coordination between policies) and prepare required reports
  • quantitively and qualitatively analyse tendencies and results on macroeconomic level by using econometric methods and software packages for policymaking purposes (monetary policy in central bank, fiscal policy in ministry of finance)
  • analyse the development of institutions for the purpose of creating public and economic policy and prepare required reports
  • evaluate simpler public projects and programmes (state programmes of public consumption, apply cost-benefit method of analysis in project evaluation) and prepare conclusions for decision-making
  • analyse the tendencies on the labour market for the purpose of creating employment policy
  • analyse the influence of macroeconomic policies on social and human development in form of employment, income division and social welfare for the purpose of creating public policies (measurement of inequality and poverty)
  • interpret macroeconomic theories and their development with the aim of analysis of macro processes in the economy (different economic systems and role of government in them, specifically in transition economies, the success of economic reforms)
  • comment on macroeconomic tendencies and influence of economic policy on these tendencies in mass media
  • perform less complex scientific research in the area of macroeconomics, and participate as teaching associate on the courses in Economics-Macroeconomics-Economic theory and analysis.

Submodule Microeconomic analysis

  • apply methods of game theory as contemporary method of analysis, as well as asymmetric information concept and methods for solving this problem and concrete problems during microeconomic decision-making in companies
  • analyse market including determination of specifics of individual markets and different market structures for the purpose of their regulation
  • apply microeconomic analysis on the sector economies
  • apply techniques of business decision-making and consulting – investment and financial decision-making
  • interpret microeconomic theory and its development
  • perform less complex scientific research in the area of microeconomics, and participate as teaching associate on the courses in Economics-Microeconomics-Economic theory and analysis.

Both submodules make the student able to:

  • work in teams and possess significant skills of interpersonal communications in interactions and cooperation with others
  • understand, prepare, and communicate complex ideas, arguments, materials, as well as present them (in written or verbally) and display mathematical and verbal skills of literacy and communication
  • perform analyses on PC
  • manage complex projects in a responsible way with application of ethical standards of profession
  • solve complex problems in different conditions with openness for new ideas and approaches and for different opinions and arguments
  • critically evaluate economic concepts with respect for different viewpoints and opinions
  • organise, supervise and train others for work.

CARREER OPPORTUNITIES

Jobs which can be performed by students after graduation from this module (depending on the chosen submodule) are:

  • economist – analyst in companies in public and private business sector
  • economic consultant
  • analytics and forecasting of macroeconomic tendencies
  • economist in government bodies and organisations (central bank, ministries, national employment agency, labour unions and employers unions, etc.)
  • economic commentator, editor in publishing companies in economics domain
  • research work in economics

All accepted students are enrolled in the first year, which is common, and in the second year of study the students select modules.

FUNDING AND COSTS

The University of Belgrade Faculty of Economics enrols 900 students in the Economics, Business Management and Statistics programme, of which 610 are state-financed students. Ranking for enrolment in the first year of study is done based on the achieved success from high school and the result at the entrance exam (ratio 40:60).

The tuition fees for citizens of the Republic of Serbia range from 92,022 RSD to 121,082 RSD, depending on the success of the study, i.e. the number of points earned in the entrance exam. Tuition fee for foreign citizens: 1,500 Euros in Serbian dinars equivalent to the middle exchange rate of the NBS on the day of payment.
